HSC PDHPE Flashcards
List the 3 nutrients that can provide the body energy
Carbohydrates
Fats
Proteins
How do carbohydrates give the body energy?
They break down into glucose and is then stored in the muscles and liver as glycogen.
How does fat give the body energy?
They are digested into triglyceride and stored in the muscles for energy. Fats that is broken down into glycerol and fatty acids provide energy for activity.
How do proteins give the body energy?
Protein is broken down into amino acids. Protein will only be used to provide energy when carbs and fats have been exhausted. The role of proteins is to repair and rebuild muscle tissue during exercise.
What is ATP?
Energy
What does a ATP molecule consist of?
Adenosine and 3 phosphate molecules
What does an ADP molecule consist of?
Adenosine and 2 phosphate molecules
How does ATP provide the body with energy?
The bond between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate will break. The extra phosphate molecule will join with a creatine molecule to make creatine phosphate (PC)
PC splits and the extra phosphate molecule will join to ADP the create ATP.
How long does the energy from ATP last for?
10-12 seconds
What are the three energy systems?
Alactacid system (ATP-PC system)
Lactic acid system (Anaerobic glycolysis system)
Aerobic system (Oxygen system)
