HSC Biology Flashcards
what is asexual reproduction?
production of a new organism without the use of sex cells
what is sexual reproduction?
sex cells join to create offspring
what is the meaning of parthenogensis?
‘virgin birth’ - an unfertilised egg cell develops into an embryo without a male gamete
what is internal fertilisation?
fertilisation that occurs in the body eg. humans
what is external fertilisation?
fertilisation that happens outside the body eg. fish
what are the three types of plant reproduction?
Budding
Spores
Binary Fission
what is budding?
a form of sexual reproduction. A new organism develops from an outgrowth or bud due to cell division at a particular site
what are spores?
a form of both sexual and asexual reproduction in plants. The parent plant send out tiny spores containing special sets of chromosomes and the plant grows from this away from the parent plant
what is binary fission?
a form of a sexual reproduction when bacteria (for instance) copies its genetic material (DNA) then divides into two
list some advantages of external fertilisation?
