HS2440 Week 10 Asyn_Structure of wall paintings Flashcards
Cave paintings- what are some of the naturally occurring pigments found and their colours. how would they be applied as a media
What are the colours/ chemical composition of the following natural pigments
malachite
azurite
lapis lazuli
cinnabar
orpiment
realgar
what is fresco eg. Crete minoan, sistine chapel
pigments are mixed into the plaster which then carbonates (calcium oxide- hydroxide)
as damp plaster converts to calcium carbonate and dries, it acts as a medium to hold the pigment in place
- what is the cross section of a fresco painting made up of
- describe the carbonation process of the carbonate plaster ground
what is the chemical equation for the process of calcium hydroxide to calcium carbonate
fresco technique: what is a cartoon, or sinopia
cartoon, model for transferring or copying; – used in the making of mosaics, tapestries, fresco pantings and the like; as, the cartoons of Raphael.
sinopia, also the preliminary sketch found on a layer of its own on the wall underneath the fresco, also a reddish brown natural earth pigment
why is the choice of pigment important when painting with a fresco technique
needs to withstand alkaline calcium hydroxide
Egyptian blue and lapis need to be applied al secco, or with a medium
(image) what is the purpose of a cartoon
to guide the painting on wet plaster
image is on paper, and is pinpricked along the lines, to “pounce” a bag of carbon pigment through the holes
also seen squaring up, to see correct proportions.
(image) showing fresco painting method - cartoon
(image) evidence from the sistine chapel showing ‘pouncing’
(image) evidence from the sistine chapel showing ‘pouncing’
(image) showing modern reconstruction of sinopia giornato. what is giornato
sections of plaster applied at a time, so it can be painted by wet
plaster obscures the sinopis
giornato is the line marking the area of the painting to be completed per day
what does incision (into the wet plaster) achieve…
helps to guide the shape, eg carving the outline of the figure into the plaster
hard to see something like this from a far distance

what is a secco technique.
using media, painting onto dry surface, or substrate
