HS & Augustine Flashcards
What is Maximinus’ argument? (Which Augustine is arguing?)
- Maximus says that the scriptures don’t say to worship the spirit.
- “Honor” the spirit because guide, teacher, sanctifier
- Father and Christ deserve worship and adoration because of their involvement in creation
- Jn 1:3 – creation through the son, none such scripture to support that the spirit is equal to the son
What is it that Augustine says which amazes Maximinus?
that the Holy Spirit has the same substance as the Father
Maximinus believes it is inappropriate to say, “the Holy Spirit has the same substance as the Father.” Why is this the case?
If he is equal, there is no longer just one only-begotten
Who else has “the same substance as the Father” according to Maximinus?
The Son
According to Maximinus, if it is the case that the Holy Spirit is “on a par with and equal to the Son” and “equally of the substance of the Father”, then what is the Son not?
then the Son is not the only-begotten, since there is another of the same substance.
Maximinus says that unlike the Father and Son, the Spirit should _____.
Not be adored (worshipped)
Maximinus says the Holy Spirit deserves honor since he is ___, ____, ____, and ____.
Why should Christ and the Father receive worship and adoration?
teacher
guide
enlightener
sanctifier
Because of their involvement in creation as author and creator.
What are the verses that Augustine uses in Ans Max 2.17.2 to support the creative activity of the Holy Spirit?
- By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the Spirit of his mouth all their power (Ps 32:6) 33:6
- You will take away their spirit, and they will fail and return to their dust. You will send forth103 your Spirit, and they will be created, and you will renew the face o f the earth (Ps 103:29-30) 104:29-30
- Lk 1:34-35 Overshadowing of the HS
- Mt. 1:18 Incarnation
What is the name of the argument lurking in the background of these statements that makes it possible for Augustine to say that whenever we read about the work of one of the Three we should understand all three to be involved?
Inseperable operations; when one is involved so are the other two
Augustine - What, according to “On the Trinity”, is “the question which generally disturbs many people”?
why the Spirit is not the Son also, since He likewise proceeds from the Father
According to Augustine, given that both the Son and Spirit are from the Father, how did the Spirit “come forth” in contrast to the Son?
not as one born, but as one given
Augustine - How does the particular way in which the “Spirit came forth” explain why the Spirit “is not called the Son”?
the idea of a “gift given” works because He was neither born as the only-begotten Son, nor made
What is the other name that Augustine ascribes to the Spirit?
The Gift
Augustine - Does the Holy Spirit as the Gift always proceed, that is to say, does he proceed from eternity?
Yes.
Does the Holy Spirit proceed from the Father alone or does he proceed from the Father as well as the Son?
Proceeds from both – father gave it to the son to give the spirit
