Who should take oestrogen-only HRT and who should take combined?
-Oestrogen-only = women with no uterus
-Combined = women with uterus (progesterone is protective against endometrial cancer)
What forms can HRT be taken in?
-Tablet (both)
-Patch (both)
-Gel (oestrogen)
-Implant (oestrogen but can have separate IUS)
-Vaginal (oestrogen)
What is the main risk when taking oral HRT?
-VTE
-Not suitable in those with a Hx of endometrial or oestrogen-dependent breast cancers
What treatment routines are there for HRT?
-Cyclical
–monthly
–3-monthly
-Continuous combined
How are cycle routines taken?
MONTHLY
-Oestrogen every day
- +Progestogen for the last 14 days of your cycle
3-MONTHLY
-Oestrogen every day
- +Progestogen for 14 days every 3 months
Who are monthly and 3-monthly cyclical HRT regimes recommended for?
-Monthly = recommended for women having regular periods
-3-monthly = irregular periods
Who is continuous combined HRT recommended for and how should it be taken?
-Recommended for those who are post-menopausal ie not had a period for 1 year
-Take both every day with no break
-If on oestrogen-only, take just oestrogen every day with no break
