HPG Axis Flashcards
what is the role of hormones released from the hypothalamus?
hormone releasing
what is the role of hormones released from the pituitary?
stimulating hormnes
what is the role of hormones released from the gonad?
functioning hormones
what is the hormone involved in the HPG which is released from the hypothalamus?
GnRH
what causes GnRH to be released?
activation of specialist neurones trigger kisspeptin - acts on neurones causing GnRH
what is produced in the pituitary? what do they act on?
FSH and LH - act on the gonads
what is the role of functioning hormone released from the gonad?
responsibole of coordination of viable gamete production, growth and development
what hormones are released from the gonads?
oestrogen,
progesterone,
testosterone,
inhibin and activin
how does GnRH reach the anterior pituitary?
via the primary plexus
what is the effect of synthetic GnRH?
stimulatory
what is the effect of GnRH analogues?
different chemical structure but still bind - down regulate the HPG
how doe GnRH agonists work?
uncouple GnRHr from their G protiens- so no longer responsive to GnRH
how do GnRH antagonists work?
more quickly
directly stop GnRH binding
when might GnRH analogues be used?
induce ovulaiton in IVF
prostate and breast cancers
gonadal protection before chemotherapy
