HPA Axis Flashcards
How do hormones work (broad overview)
Alter the metabolism of target organs/cells by using receptors to increase or decrease activity
What is the function of the pituitary gland
Arcadian rhythm
Why are receptors needed?
So only certain cells will respond to the hormones being released and so no undesired actions occur
How do fat soluble hormones work
Diffuse straight through belayer and alter gene expression
What is the main purpose of the hypothalamus
Acts as a intermediate between neural and endocrine system, via the pituitary gland
Purpose of ADH?
Increases water retention and stimulates corticosteroids
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment by adjusting levels in the body via negative feedback.
Positive feedback purpose?
Exaggerates a action to become stronger, eg. Child birth and oxytocin
