Although alliances makes countries feel secure it is dangerous + increases likelihood of war.

Trying to build an empire (when a country takes over new lands and controls them).
Empires bring power, economic strength and trade resources

Austria-Hungary + Russia competed for dominance in Eastern Europe.
What does nationalism mean and how did it relate to starting of WW1?
Having pride in your country + being willing to defend it.
Nationalism escalated tensions
