What was corporatism in Spain?
to improve econ, gov brought employers + workers (primarily TU) into decision making process espc. practical implementation of econ policy
What did corporatism create?
syndicate with the aim of improving industrial relations between businesses + their employees
What was established as part of the syndicate?
boards, primarily consisting of employers’ representatives + trade unionists, to negotiate employment conditions
Downside of the syndicates?
BUT syndicates were ultimately responsible + accountable to gov
so, in practice syndicates used by gov to impose wage rates, production targets, price of goods
criticism = gov focus was to help big business
What was the consultation period?
if a broad agreement over employment conditions could be reached then workers had to promise no strike action
What size area did the boards operate?
on a regional level to take into account econ variations across the country when setting wage levels
What was corporatism on an ideological level?
compromise between communism + capitalism in Spain - aimed to prevent recurring industrial unrest

brutally crushed by Falangist militia + civil guard
Change in industrial tension/unrest?
industrial tension + unrest worsened, espc during mid-late 50’s bc econ difficulties
