means “to know people and places,” or better yet, “to be acquainted with.” For example:
I know Michael Phelps.
She knows the city of Denver well.
We’re not familiar with this neighborhood.
conocer
Yo conozco a Michael Phelps.
Ella conoce muy bien la ciudad de Denver.
No conocemos este barrio.
means “to know facts and information.” Consider the following examples:
I know how many medals Michaels Phelps won.
She knows the history of Denver.
We don’t know where the house is.
saber
Yo sé cuantas medallas ganó Michael Phelps.
Ella sabe la historia de Denver.
No sabemos donde está la casa.
means “to know how” when followed by an infinitive.
I know how to swim.
She knows how to research.
They know how to get to his house.
saber
Notice there is no need to include the word como:
Yo sé nadar.
Ella sabe investigar.
Saben ir a su casa.
means “to meet” in the Preterite.
I met the new student yesterday.
conocer
Yo conocí a la nueva estudiante ayer.
means “to find out” in the Preterite.
I found out that she’s from Argentina.
saber
Yo supe que es de Argentina.
