How to do a titration Flashcards

1
Q

What are titrations used for?

A

= determining the concentration of a solution
= usually an acid or an alkali

Q

In this example what goes where?

A

= unknown concentration: acid
= known concentration + volume: alkali

Q

How do we accuratley use a pippete?

A

= volume: 25cm^3
= have a line at the top- shows exact 25cm^3
= rinse pippete with distilled water, removes unwanted chemicals
= this will contain droplets of water, dilute the solution
= rinse the pippete with the alkali, and discard down the sink
= place conical flask (rinsed with distilled water traces of water will not interfere), next to the beaker filled with the alkali,
= place tip of pippet, in alkali ansd fill
= lif the pippete and very slowly drop, this is until the miniscus bottom, is exactly on 25cm^3 mark and this is viewed at eye level and move the pippeyte over the flask and release to transfer any stuck, tiuch the tip of the pippete on the side or in the alkali

Q

How do we avoid bubbles with the pippete?

A

= slowly,
= make sure the tip of the pippete is below the surface of the alkali

Q

How do we increase accuracy of the pippete?

A

= fill slightly pass thge 25cm as the level of liquid drops slightly when we lift out the alkali

Q

What do we add to the conical flask?

A

= a few drops of indicator
= indicatirs are weak acids so if we add alot, innacurate results

Q

How do we use the birrurte?

A

= rinse the birrute with distilled wtaer- removes unwanted chemicals
= rinse with acid
= clamp the birrute level
= use a funnel and fill the birrurte with acid, the level of acd should be slivhtlt above 0 remove funnel prevents acid from dripping from the funnel into the birrute
= open tap and allow acid to slowly release acid, we want the bottom of the miniscus at 0
= look at eye level
=

Q

What is the next step?

A

= place conical flask otno a white tile
= make colour change easier to see
= open tap of birrute ajd sowlt release acid into conical flask, whilst swirling, allows mixing so they can react
= watch the colour of the indicator, stop when the indicator changes to the first permanent colour

Q

What is the uncertainty when reading the birutte?

A

= half 0.1
= so 0.05
= it is either X.00
or X.X5
