What is DNS?
Domain Name System
System that replaces IP Addresses with Names that are easy to remember and use.
How are IP Addresses written?
4 sets of numbers ranging from 0-255 seperated by periods.
Why does DNS exist?
Hard to remember IP Addresses in their original form.
What is DNS divided into?
Domain Hierarchy.
What are the 3 levels of Domain Hierarchy?
Root
TLD
SLD
What is the Root Domain represented by?
. (period)
What is TLD?
Top Level Domain
What are the 2 types of TLD?
gTLD (General Top Level Domain)
ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain)
What is the most common TLD?
.com
What is SLD?
Second Level Domain
What are the rules for SLDs?
a-z
0-9
cannot start or end with hyphens
cannot have consecutive hyphens
Maximum 63 characters
What is a Subdomain?
SDL attached to SDL
Where is a Subdomain located?
To the left of the SDL
What are the rules for Subdomains?
a-z
0-9
Cannot start or end with a hyphen
Cannot have consecutive hyphens
0-253 characters (including SDL and other Sub-SDLs)
Can attach as many as you want to SDL
What is a DNS Record Type?
The type of IP Address the Domain Names resolve to.
