Why was his power still limited?
Only 2 other Nazis in the cabinet. He didn’t have the Reichstag majority. He was dependant on Hindenburg’s support.
What could Hitler do to gain majority?
Persuad the cabinet to hold a general election and win with 2 thirds majority.
How could Hitler become effectively a dictator?
Achieved through a continuiation of policy of legality, with terror and political skill. This could happen within 2 months.
When was the Reichstag fire?
February 1933
What was Hindenburg persuaded to do?
Sign the emergency decree which restricted freedoms. This allowed Nazis a legal basis to terrorise, persecute and repress opposition.
Describe what happened in the March election.
The Nazi vote increased from 33.1% to 43.9%. He still didn’t have the two thirds majority he needed. The SA celebrated with violence. Hitler appealed to stop the SA to avoid undermining support.
Describe what happened the day of Potsdam in March.
During the election, there was some violence amongst the SA. Hitler had to seem peaceful and assure them he wasn’t violent. He acted composed and respectful and gained support. (This created the Volksgemeinschaft.)
Describe what happened on March 23rd to the Enabling Act
The act passed 444 to 94. Communists were not allowed to attend. There were Nazi banners. The SPD was the only party to oppose. Hitler could now rule without Reichstag and create a one party state.
