- Involving children and young people in planning their own learning
- Communicating clearly, using positive and appropriate language for age and stage of development
- Giving effective feedback and facilitating children’s and young people’s self-assessment
- Managing own and others’ time
- Providing nurturing experiences and opportunities to support children and young people to express feelings
- Observing and assessing individuals, providing tailored interventions through early identification.
Why is involving children in planning their own learning important? And what are the examples?
importance
Helps motivation and concentration.
Examples
+ Giving children and young people a choice of activity.
+ Giving a child or young person a choice of revision activities.
Why is Communicating clearly, using positive and appropriate language for age and stage of development important ? and what are some examples of it.
Importance
Makes understanding and remembering information easier.
If the language level is not right for the child or young person, they will not understand and may not learn.
If the tone is negative, children and young people may respond negatively.
Examples
+ Gaining attention and making eye contact.
+ If needed, simplifying sentences and explaining what words mean.
Why is Giving effective feedback and facilitating children’s and young people’s self-assessment important? And what are some examples of it?
Importance
Helps children and young people know what they are doing well and understand how they can improve specific skills or knowledge.
Examples
+ Asking a young person what they feel they have done well, and identifying a specific area for improvement.
Why is Managing own and others’ time important? And what are some examples of it?
Importance
Makes lessons and sessions run smoothly and so increases learning time.
Examples
+ Starting lessons and sessions on time.
+ Preparing the resources and activities ahead.
+ Helping children and young people to use their time effectively.
Why is providing nurturing experiences and opportunities to support children to be able to express their feelings? And what are some examples of it?
Importance
A nurturing environment helps promote positive behaviour. Helping children and young people to express their feelings means that they are more likely to cope with set backs.
Examples
+ Giving children and young people opportunities to talk about how they are feeling.
+ Creating a calm environment.
+ Praising children and young people when they talk about or cope with strong emotions.
Why is Observing and assessing individuals, providing tailored interventions through early identification important? And examples of how it can be practised?
Importance
Ensures that children or young people who need additional support are recognised.
Can identify where a strategy for teaching a topic is not working, e.g. several children/ young people have not understood a concept.
Examples
+ Hearing a child or young person read and checking that the text has been understood.
+ Class test on a topic that has recently been taught.
Why is Engaging disengaged children/young people by involving them in their own learning and assessment important? And examples of how it is practised.
Importance
Prevents the gap in knowledge and skills between them and engaged children becoming wider.
Can help children and young people to become more motivated.
Examples
+ Asking a child or young person about the conditions or resources that help them to learn best.
+ Taking time to provide individual feedback.
