A government system where everyone has the right to vote and to elect the leaders

Choosing a representative by making a mark on a voting form on a specific day

Leaders of the country who make and carry out the rules and laws of the country

A free and fair process through which all adult citizens have the right to vot

A group of people who have similar ideas about how a country should be run

A form given to a voter on which to mark which party they are voting
The first democratic government in SA
- Before 1994, most people were not aloud to vote.
- Many people fought against the apartheid government
- These people were sent to jail, forced to leave the country and died
- In 1994 we had the first democratic elections, so all adult citizens could vote.
Political Parties and voting elections
- Political parties work hard to get elected
- In SA elections are held every 5 years.
- To vote they are given a ballot paper, the votes are counted and announced on the TV, Radio and in newspapers.
The purpose of constitution
In December 1996 the new constitution was passed into law, everyone must obey the constitution.
The role of Parliament
- Part of government that makes the countries laws, one of the 3 branches.
Rules and laws
People must obey them, or they might get hurt. It tells us what we are allowed to do and what we aren’t allowed to do.
The justice system and equality under law
During apartheid the justice system was not fair, people were not allowed to defend themselves in court.
The Constitution makes sure everyone is treated equally.
