How Mass Movement Creates Distinctive Coastal Landforms Flashcards
Slumping involves the movement of
saturated soil and weak rock along a curved slip plane.
Slumps can create
steep backscarps and terraced slopes, such as those seen at Barton-on-Sea in southern England
Rockfalls occur on
steep, hard rock cliffs when material is loosened by weathering (e.g., freeze-thaw). Gravity causes the rocks to fall and accumulate at the base of the cliff.
Rockfalls contribute to the formation of
scree slopes or talus piles at the base of cliffs
Landslides involve the
rapid movement of large blocks of rock or earth downslope, often triggered by heavy rainfall or coastal erosion
Landforms Created: Landslides can lead to
the collapse of coastal cliffs, creating steep cliffs or headlands
Mudflows occur when
saturated fine-grained sediments flow downslope due to gravity. This is common on coastlines with unconsolidated material, such as glacial deposits.
