How lines of spectra is obtained Flashcards
1.
The electron of a hydrogen atom for example can have many energy values
-Normally the electron will occupy the lowest energy state which is the ground state
2.
However if the electron absorb energy from heating or collision with another electron it may be promoted to a higher energy level
It must have the right amount of energy to be able to be promoted
3
This promotion will send the electron in an exited state , however the electron is unstable an d will send the electron to a lower level. In this process of returning the electron will have to lose energy which is emitting a photon of electromagnetic radiation
4.
This movement of electron between energy level are called transition
- Each of this transition results in an emission of a photon with a particular wavelength which produce a line spectra
5.
Downward transition will result in emission
Upward transition will reusult in Absorbtion
