How is GIS used when collecting and recording data? Flashcards
GIS stands for
geographic information systems
a tool for recording, organisisng, displaying and analysing geographic spatial information
what can it be used for in investigations?
- plan locations:take photos to look at access
- collect data:make notes in the field and pinpoint to exact locations
- record data: make notes/take photos, record longitude and latitude
- present data: create layers of info over base map
two formats of data
1) raster data
2) vector data
raster data
digital images represented in grids
vector data
layers of geometric shapes e.g lines, points and polygons
How useful is GIS in data collecting/recording? (6 things)
1) used in the field to measure and record info linked to specific points
2) data loggers can immediately upload data to maps
3) it measures distance in straight lines over large distances
4) secondary data can be imported to maps e.g. photographs
5) different base maps can be used to offer reasons why data may not have been collected in an area
6) data is tied to an exact location
apps that use GIS
- ArcGIS
- iGeology
- FieldAssets
Adavantages
- saves time
- adjustable scale
- add/remove layers
- gives exact locations
- handle large amounts of data
Disadvantges
- costly
- not always simple to use/work
- not accessible to everyone
- vulnerable to software failures
