Q

What does it mean to “know the dog’s instincts” and what are some examples?

A

It means looking at what type of breed you have and learning about what they were meant to do
Herding dogs love chasing and fetching things
Hounds will stronger instincts to follow scent
Mixed breed dogs may have several different instincts
It doesnt matter what kind of dog, if you want to have the best communication possible, learn about their strongest instincts first. Once you know that, you can determine what type of play they like best and this is where they will have the best opportunity to learn

Q

How can you use positive reinforcements when working with dogs?

A

Small treats are quite helpful when learning to communicate with your dog (but you do not want to depend on them, they will become less effective)
Using instincts can serve you much better than treats (your dog will never forget its insticts)
The more you use this type of play with a dog, the more you and your praise will seve as positive reinforcement

Q

What are some examples of assertive signals you should use when working with your dog?

A

Use a low-pitched, calm tone and short words (Using a high-pitched voice can give the message that you are not in charge)
Use the same words for the same commands (EX if you want a dog to stay use only the command “stay” don’t also use “wait”, “don’t move” etc)
Stand tall, but not directly over dog (carry yourself like you are in control)
Consider acting “like a dog”, since dogs don’t have hands they don’t know a lot of hand movements (EX if you think a dog will jump up at you, instead of holding our your hands to say no, lean your body foreward and invade their space)

A

Pick a sound, when giving a command, and stick to it
If you are using a strong, firm voice to tell a dog to sit, you don’t want to use a sing-song voice the next time you tell the dog to sit

Q

What are some reasons to use hand signals with dogs?

A

Dogs have a superb ability to read body language, in fact its much easier for dogs to understand body language than verbal communication
If a dog is deaf, hand signals are the only way to communicate and allows the dog to learn the same commands as hearing dogs
If you live/work in areas where silence is necessary or you don’t want to be too loud

You will likely get a negative reaction, such as submissive urination
The dog is reading your actions as intimidating and dominant
You can chanage your approach to be non-threatening by crouching down to their level and bringing your hand to the chest first and then up to the head, you will get a positive reaction
