It may also be only a second between growl and bite
Though it is very rare for dogs to bite with out a warning

What is the first thing to do if there are signs of agression?

A

Especially when it is unlike the dog to act agressively, take the dog to the vet. Dogs with painful conditions, thyroid abnormalty, cognitive issues, or siezure disorders, may show agression. Can also happen with dogs who are geriactric and confused or are taking certain medications

A

Agression can become very dangerous very quickly, the behavior must be corrected and an expert is the best person to do this
Professionals will can help create a treatment plan and work with the owners to help the dog
Some behavior modification techniques normal people use can actually be detrimental to the dog

A

Agression can most definitly be reduced in severity and sometimes it can seem as though it has been completly eliminated
It is best to never consider an agressive dog “cured”
Sometimes after years of being well behaved, a “perfect storm” of triggers can set off a dog

What is “quiet” training and how do you implement it?

A
  1. Allow the dog to bark until you say “quiet”, do not shout, use a calm and clear command
  2. Go to the dog, gently hold their muzzle closed and say “quiet” again
  3. Release their muzzle, step back and call the dog away from the area
  4. Ask dog to sit and give them a treat
  5. If the dog stays in the area, give them a small treat every couple of minutes
  6. If the dog continues to bark, repeat the steps
    If you do not want to grab their muzzle you can feed them small treats to distract and use the “quiet” command

If your dog likes playing with toys, keep toys near the entrance and offer when poeple arrive
When walking the dog, distract them with tiny treats when walking past people, making sure to praise when they don’t bark
Putting a head halter on the dog when out walking can also distract them
Reward dog when they pass people without barking

What are some tips to remedy destructive chewing?

A

“Dog proof” your home by putting away valuables
Make sure your dog has access to toys and chew bones
Try to identify times the dog is most likely to chew and try to give them something else to chew on before that time
Discourage chewing by using deterrant sprays
Supervise dog as much as possible and tell them no when they chew on something. Then give them something else to chew on. If you can’t supervise og during they day, maybe confine them to a crate or small room and make sure there are no things they shouldnt chew on around them.
Praise dog when they chew on things they are allowed to

A

It is a foul tasting liquid that you spray on things you dont want your dog to chew on
You can buy deterrent spray at pet stores
You can also make your own natural deterrent spray using citrus, apple cider vinegar or chili pepper

A

Don’t scold, hit or punish the dog (They can’t connect this punishment with behavior they have done in the past hours/minutes)
Don’t muzzle dog to prevent chewing
DO NOT use tape/rope to hold the mouth closed to prevent chewing (WTF?!)

What are the differences between playful and agressive biting?

A

Look at body language to tell
Playing = Dog will have a relaxed body and face
Agressive = Dog will be stiff and often pull lips back and expose teeth

How can you teach dogs to mouth without pain?

A

Young dogs usually learn how to control their bite when playing with older dogs
Allow dog to mouth your hands and when the dog bites too hard, make a high pitched yelp
Praise dog for stopping and then resume playing, then repeat the process
You can also yelp and then walk away and stay away for a few minutes and then resume play. This method works when for older dogs

A

After dog understands that it must be gentle with their mouth, then teach them how to avoid mouthings
Offer chew bones/toys when they start mouthing on you
Distract dog by feeding them small treats
Introduce types of play that does not require contact such as tug of war or fetch
Teaching impulse control by telling the dog to sit, stay and “leave it”
Dogs that bite feel/ankles can be distracted by toys or you can stop moving as soon as they start mouthing and then give praise when they stop
Some dogs mouth when theya re bored so make sure you are offering them new toys
Dogs might mouth if they have pent-up energy so you can schedule play dates to get rid of energy
Deterrents might work, put spray on body parts dog often mouths

A

Use a peppermint breath spray and as soon as the dog begins to mouth, yelp or say “ouch” then shoot one quick burst into the dogs mouth. It won’t hurt the dog but it will be uncomfortable

A

Change the negative feelings to positive ones
Over time the dog will learn that what is fear is actually good
When leaving home, offer your dog a puzzle toy to keep them busy. Make sure you take the toy away when you come home and only give the toy when you leave to make it special

A
  1. Use pre-departure cues (like picking up your keys) but don’t leave (do this several times). This will help reduce anxiety
  2. “Be away” from your dog for longer periods of time but do not actually leave the house. Tell your dog to sit and stay in a room and then close the door. Gradually increase time alone
  3. Do predeparture cues and then “be away”
  4. Actually leave the home, but only for a few minutes. then slowly walk in through another door. Always remain calm and praise the dog when they make progess
