How Does Our Heart Work? Flashcards
What are the main functions of the circulatory system?
Transports:
Oxygen, nutruents, wastes, and hormones.
What are the main functions of the circulatory system?
Protects Against:
Blood loss, disease causing microbes, toxic substances.
What are the main functions of the circulatory system?
Temperature Regulation:
Heat is distributed all over the body.
What are the main structures?
Blood - Carry
Red blood cells – carry gases
White blood cells - immunity
Platelets - clotting
Plasma – water with dissolved nutrients, wastes, hormones, gases and many other materials (generates blood pressure)
What are the main structures?
Blood Vessels - Roadways
Arteries –away from heart to tissues (generates blood pressure)
Capillaries – through tissues
Veins – back to the heart from the tissues
What are the main structures?
Heart - pump blood
Generates blood pressure
What are the structures of the heart and how does it cause circulation of the blood around the body?
Left - Oxygenated
Right - Deoxygenated
vena cavae → right atrium → right ventricle → pulmonary trunk → pulmanary arteries → lungs → pulmonary veins → left atrium → left ventircle → aorta → body
What makes the heart sounds?
First second (lub) is the atrioventricular/cuspid valves snapping shut. Second sound (dub) is the semilunar valves snapping shut.
How does the heartbeat?
Sinoatrial (SA) node sends electrical signal to the Atrioventrical (AV) node - goes into the AV bundle which splits and causes contraction of the ventricles.
How do we measure heartrate?
Neck or Wrist (Major Artery). Actully measuring the expansion and relaxation of the artery.
