How do we "see" the brain Flashcards
what 3 ways can we “see” the brain?
1) x-ray techniques - brain structures only
2) electrical/magnetic techniques
3) metabolic techniques
what are the 2 types of x-ray techniques
1) CT scan
- detects abnormalities, injuries, tumours (computerized axial tomography)
2) MRI
- clearer images (magnetic resonance imaging)
what are the 2 types of electrical/magnetic techniques
1) EEG
- amplifies and measures electrical changes within neurons
2) MEG
- no distortions from scalp
- more sensitive than devices used
what are the 2 types of metabolic techniques
1) PET scan
- maps patterns of blood flow, oxygen use, glucose consumption - shows location of brain activity
- patient injected with radioactive substance, scanner then detects movement
2) fMRI
- for better resolution of brain activity
