When was William I crowned King of England?
25 December, Christmas Day
List the problems William I faced once he was crowned King.
People didn’t like him as he was French, and the Godwin family tried to cause rebellion against him as well as the Danish Vikings.
Draw and label the feudal system.
Land. William (the King)
The Feudal system was introduced by the King to:
Reward his followers, keep law and order over the country, raise money and raise an army.
Explain in one sentence how the Feudal system did all these things.
The King kept law and order over the country by rewarding the barons with land who raised money from the knights and peasants who had to fight for the King.
What was the domesday book?
It was a survey which the King took which said how much everyone’s land was worth and all the important items, this showed how much tax they were to pay.
How was the information in the domesday book collected?
The kings officials went around every village and collected the information from the priests and recorded it into books.
Why did William I need to carry out the doomsday survey?
It was mostly to pay for an army but it was also as people were not truthful about the money owed.
Who collected taxes in England?
William used his own officials.
How did William I make this job more important?
He made the Barons into sherifs. The sherifs payed some money to the King but kept all the fines.
Why did William build castles?
He used them to control Normandy and he thought it would be more difficult to conquer as he thought one of the reasons he did conquer so easily, was because of the lack of castles. It was also for protection and keeping taxes. It was for the soldiers as well.
