The president thought the new federation would allow the British to control the territories. He wanted to unite the Malay Archipelago.

It had a serious threat to Singapore ( 42 bombings)
How did communism affect Singapore?
Singapore still continued to receive threats from communist groups.

31 January 1974 it was the ferry boat Laju that was hijacked.

There was a communist movement that fought against the return of the French.

Singapore had a bilateral relationship with US which was strong economically and militarily. Tried to improve bilateral ties with Indonesia after the Konfrontasi.

Singapore was the 117th member to join the UN after separating from Malaysia and became a founding member of ASEAN in 1967.
What did ASEAN help to do?
ASEAN helped to prevent the spread of communism and promote social, economy and culture through multilateral cooperation. ( e.g increase trade between members)
