  • Before the reformation there was little sense of the English ‘state’ and English Literature was not widely published being seen as inferior to Latin

Effects of the growing English Nationalism

A
  • Henrys religious change regarding the supremacy led to a new sense of nationalism
  • His theory that England was an empire that should rule without outside intervention led to an anti-catholic fear of foreigners
  • Anti-cahtolic and Anti-Spanish propaganda under Liz enhanced this feeling as the people saw Elizabeth as their ‘godly queen’

  • Translators William Tyndale and Miles Coverdale (who produced english editions of the bible in 1529 and 1535 intorduced this to a wider audience
  • Scholars/Teachers like Roger Ascham emphasised its use in teaching - leading to English grammars and Dictionaries being published

  • Tradtional medievel forms of entertainment (art, poetry, music and theatre) were replaced by a culture that emphasised the new protestant religion, English lang anf nation state
