- Religious change had a large effect on the lang, politics and way of life of Eng
- Before the reformation there was little sense of the English ‘state’ and English Literature was not widely published being seen as inferior to Latin
- popular culture was based mainly around the catholic church and its art/imagery and celebrations

Effects of the growing English Nationalism
A
- Henrys religious change regarding the supremacy led to a new sense of nationalism
- His theory that England was an empire that should rule without outside intervention led to an anti-catholic fear of foreigners
- Anti-cahtolic and Anti-Spanish propaganda under Liz enhanced this feeling as the people saw Elizabeth as their ‘godly queen’

- reformation placed more of an emphasis on the English language
- this is becsuse many protestant refromers encourages the BIble and church services be translated into English

- Translators William Tyndale and Miles Coverdale (who produced english editions of the bible in 1529 and 1535 intorduced this to a wider audience
- Scholars/Teachers like Roger Ascham emphasised its use in teaching - leading to English grammars and Dictionaries being published

- the end of the catholic church in England meant the end of culture that had lasted hundreds of years

- Visual tradition stripped away
- Images and statues of saints were destroyed, colourful wall paintings whitewashed over, rood screen s and cruifixes removed

- Instead of learning about Catholicisim visually, congs were expected to listen to sermons. The word of God was seen as much more important

- Wealthy and highly decorated shrines (i.e. Thomas Beckett’s at Canterbury) were destroyed, along with the trad of pilgramage
- Many holy days destroyed, as well as popular medivel traditions like miracle or morality plays, enacting scenes from the bible

- Tradtional medievel forms of entertainment (art, poetry, music and theatre) were replaced by a culture that emphasised the new protestant religion, English lang anf nation state
