- Routine duties are important
Why is spending time with all types of employees important?
Information gathering, reality checks, etc.
CEOs must not seem unapproachable or out of touch
Structure and culture should align with one another and with firm strategy
What are processes and controls and why do firms need them?
Routines to help formulate, implement, and review effectiveness and efficiency of firm strategy and actions
CEOs must resist the urge to manage stock price rather than the business
CEOs should be mindful of outside activities that are not directly related to the business and how much time is spent on them
List the paradoxes of a CEOs job
- Influence is direct (decision making) and indirect (shaping culture)
- Must manage internal and external constituencies
- Must be proactive and reactive
- Must have leverage (control of resources) and constraints (stakeholders’ power)
- Have tangible (determining budgets) and symbolic (signaling) roles
- Have formal power (authority) and need legitimacy (workers’ confidence)
