1992: WHO declassifies homosexuality as a mental illness
2014: THe Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act comes into effect in England and Wales, making same-sex marriage legal.
2019: WHO organisation declassifies transgender health issues as a mental illness.

2021: Although against the law in the UK prejudice and discrimination is still present against members of the LGBTQ+ community and still formalised in some countries. Death penalty still exists for same sex intercourse in Iran and Saudi Arabia

Progress is made incredibly slowly so people today have been and continue to be severely affected by their sexuality and gender identity

1866: a married woman and all she owns belong to her husband, education seen as a way of making girls better wives and mothers, no higher education available
1895: a city of London byelaw makes it illegal to hit your wife between 10pm and 7am because the noise kept people awake
1920: the sex discrimination removal act allows women access to the legal profession and accountancy
2004: domestic violence, crime and victims act makes common assault an arrestable offence

Black soldiers from throughout the British Empire fought in WW1. In 1919, there were ‘race riots’ where people wrongly claimed black soldiers were taking white people’s jobs
Notting Hill Riots: poor white families competed with poor carribeans for housing after 1948 British Nationality act that had permitted large numbers of people from the commonwealth to migrate easily.
The ‘white defence league’ urged people to ‘keep britain white’
Riots started on the 29th of August when a gang of white youths attacked a swedish woman who had a black husband.
mon of 300-400 white people attacked the houses of West-Indian residents. The disturbances continued every night until they faded out by the 5th of september.

The Notting Hill carnival was started by Claudia Jones as a means of healing the area in 1959
