Q
What is slum upgrading?
A
- Cities may choose to upgrade slums by improving the quality of housing and providing basic services such as water, electricity, and sewerage.
- self-help schemes are one method that involves the participation of low-income households to improve conditions of existing housing
- goverments do not directly provide using but provide assistance in other forms such as providing materials or basic services
- self-help schemes have the disadvantage of requiring residents to upgrade their own housing which may need skills they lack or tools they do not have the money to afford.
- it may also take a longer time as residents are only able to work on their houses on their off days

Q
What is provision of public housing?
A
- Public housing refers to government efforts to provide housing units with basic services, usually basic income households
- public housing is reasonaly priced compared to private housing and may be subsidised by the goverment
- Public housing has a disadvantage of needing residents of slums to leave their houses and relocate so the goverment can build housing for them, along with taking time for the houses to be built
