  • People move from rural to urban areas in search of a better life
  • Insufficient jobs may be present to cater to the large amounts of migrants
  • migrants would have difficulty getting jobs and are unable to afford housing
  • cities may be unable to build houses quickly enough to house large numbers of migrants causing housing shortage and the formation of slums

A

environmental pollution:

  • lack of proper garbage disposal systems may lead to the dumping of trash and waste into open drains and rivers leading to land pollution
  • rivers polluted by garbage would contaminate water sources

Poor living conditions:

  • people living in slums may not have access to safe drinking water which may cause illness
  • no access to proper drinking water causing disease
  • stagnant waters cause the breeding of mosquitos which causes diseases like malaria

  • people living in slums are vulnerable to the risk of fires, landslides and evictions.
  • Therefore the face the risk of injury, death and loss of property

In slums, houses are made using weak and flimsy material of poor quality like zinc and cardboard.
Houses may collapse easily from natural disasters such as earthquakes
houses are built close together and residents may not be able to evacuate quickly during a natural disaster.
