Hot Spots and Island Chains Flashcards
Stage 1
Radioactive decay in lower mantle
Magma rises to oceanic lithosphere as magma plume
Stage 2
Plume is stationary, lithosphere is not
Oceanic plate moves over fixed hot spot
magma forces its way through weaknesses to from submarine volcano
Stage 3
Millions of years of volcanic activity causes this volcano to grow above water level forming a volcanic island
Stage 4
Lithosphere moves due to convection currents, volcanic islands move away from magma plume becoming extinct
Stage 5
Over time these Islands cool and subside and are weathered and eroded (become smaller over time)
Stage 6
New Islands form as fresh oceanic crust takes its place over the rising mantle plume
