Host defenses Flashcards
Midterms
Lactoferrin
Binds iron, deprives pathogens from Fe
Lactoperoxidase
prod superoxide radicals, reactive O2 species
Transferrin
prod in liver, carries iron thru blood
Neutrophil
First responder to infection, phagocytosis
Eosinophil
Allergic reactions. Kills parasite, neutrolizes basophil & mast cell prod
Basophil
Induce & maintain allergic reactions. Stim prod of IgE
Monocytes
prof phagocyte
Lymphocytes
Mediators of adaptive immunity (T cells, B cells, NK cells)
B cells
Matures in bone marrow. Prod antibodies, mediates humoral immunity
T cells
Thymocytes (matures in thymus). CMI.
T helper cells
Activate macrophages, inflammation. Activates B cells and T cells
Cytotoxic T cells
Kills infected cells
Regulatory T cells
Suppresses the immune response
NK cells
Matures in bone marrow. Kills target cells. First line of defense against virally infected and tumor cells
Leukopenia
Decrease in circulation of WBC
