Admit
To formally accept a patient into the hospital for treatment.
Example: The patient was admitted to the hospital for surgery.
Discharge
To release a patient from the hospital after treatment.
Example: The patient was discharged from the hospital after a week.
Diagnosis
The process of determining the cause or nature of a medical condition.
Example: The doctor made a diagnosis of pneumonia.
Medication
Substances used to treat or prevent disease.
Example: The patient was prescribed medication for high blood pressure.
Procedure
A medical or surgical operation.
Example: The patient underwent a procedure to remove a tumor.
Recovery
The process of regaining health or strength after an illness or injury.
Example: The patient is in recovery after surgery.
Intensive care unit (ICU)
A special area of a hospital for patients with severe or critical conditions. Example: The patient was transferred to the ICU for close monitoring.
Emergency room (ER)
A department of a hospital that is open 24 hours a day for patients with urgent medical needs.
Example: The patient was taken to the ER for a broken bone.
Blood pressure
The force of blood against the walls of the arteries.
Example: The nurse checked the patient’s blood pressure.
Blood test
A laboratory test that measures different components in a person’s blood.
Example: The doctor ordered a blood test to check for anemia.
X-ray
A diagnostic test that uses radiation to create images of the inside of the body.
Example: The patient had an x-ray to check for a broken bone.
CT scan
A diagnostic test that uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed images of the inside of the body.
Example: The patient had a CT scan to check for a brain injury.
MRI
A diagnostic test that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body.
Example: The patient had an MRI to check for a spinal cord injury.
Physical therapy
A form of treatment that uses exercises and other techniques to help patients recover from injuries or illnesses.
Example: The patient received physical therapy to help with their recovery after a knee surgery.
Occupational therapy
A form of treatment that helps patients regain the ability to perform daily activities and tasks.
Example: The patient received occupational therapy to help them regain the ability to use their hand after a stroke.
