The Catholic Church
Medieval- Catholic Church extremely powerful in society , restricted ideas , only allowed Four Humours.
Renaissance- Power of Catholic church challenged, printed books had no control over what ideas were spread.
Herbal Remedies
Medieval- Herbs like Therica (a mix of 70) and ingredients like honey oil, mallow and camomile.
Renaissance- Herbs were more exotic and came from overseas like coffee
Medieval hospital care
Hospitals were mainly staffed by religious devotees.
You would go for rest not treatment.
A fresh diet of salmon and vegetables and fresh bedding would be provided.
Physicians would sometimes visit
Physicians
Urine charts.
Renaissance physicians took an interest in the size, shape and colour of herbs.
Apothecaries
Medieval- Apothecaries were people who mixed herbal remedies and had good knowledge of which plants had healing powers thanks to a good study of the materia medica.
Renaissance- Apothecaries began to experiment with chemicals / arsenic compounds.
Care in the home
In Medieval times people would see hospital as a chance to escape chaotic towns.
In Renaissance times people would be visited by “health maidens” bringing them remedies.
The very richest in Industrial times had all their care provided for them in their homes.
Pest Houses
More common after 1536.
After the theory of contagion, these became places where people with specific diseases like leprosy, plague and pox would go.
19th century Hospitals
Hospitals became places you would get treated.
Physicians/Doctors would visit everyday.
Charity hospitals existed for the “deserving poor”.
Rich preferred care at home.
NHS
Healthcare paid for through taxes.
Organised hospitals.
The poor no longer relied on charity.
Government funding meant hospitals could access new high-tech science and tech.
Factors helping the fight against Lung Cancer
Scanners- CT Scans and PET CT Scans to analyse cells.
Dyes- To stain potentially cancerous cells.
Transplants- To allow patients access to healthy lungs.
Government- 1965: banned advertising on TV, 2007: Smoking Ban in public places.
