What are the 3 areas that a horses coat is comprised of
- Body hair 2. Mane 3. Tail
Solid coats - characteristics
Have only one colour over whole body, mane, tail, legs black or chestnut
Mixed coat - 2 Separate colours characteristics
Uniform colour on body, but mane, tail and extremities of the legs are black or dark Bay - hair varying from brown to a bright reddish colour with dark or black mane, tail, and extremities Buckskin - beige to yellow body with black mane, tail and extremities often with a dorsal stripe Mouse coloured - ash grey hair with black mane, tail and extremities
Mixed coat - 2 colours mixed characteristics
Grey - mix of white and black hairs in mane and extremities, which are usually darker in tone when the horse is young. Coat becomes lighter when aging. Strawberry roan - mix of chestnut and white hair in mane and extremities
Mixed coat - 3 colours mixed
Blue roan - mixture of black, white and chestnut hair Bay roan - mixture of brown, white and chestnut hair
Paint coat characteristics
A combo of 2 distinct coats, generally white coat with patches of another colour black, brown, bay or chestnut Piebald - white with black patches Skewbald - white with brown patches (brown skew bald) or white with chestnut or bay patches ( chestnut/bay skewbald) Appaloosa - mostly white with small black or chestnut spots, usually on hindquarters
Coat characteristics (3) - shades that add to basic coat colour
- Flea-bitten - small black or brown spots in coat, often on grey horses 2. Dun - varies from mouse colour to golden, extremities black and show zebra marks on legs and a dorsal stripe 3. Other - chestnut coat differences (copper red, liver chestnut, blond or might chestnut) differences in bay coats (blood bay, dark bay, light bay)
