What is the purpose of grooming?
A
Cleans the coat and messages the skin. Grooming following exercising involves checking the legs to determine that there is no heat swelling, tenderness, or injury * encourages good blood circulation * encourages skin secretions by loosening any dirt blocking pores * any abnormalities such as sores, cuts etc are noticed and treated immediately * keeps coat in good condition * improves appearance * keeps horse comfortable

- Rubber curry 2. Dandy brush 3. Hoof pick 4. Soft body brush 5. First sponge (face only) 6. Rag or towel 7. Second sponge (anus and genitals only) 8. Metal curry 9. Metal comb

Grooming method - steps (7)
A
- Hoof pick - clean bottom of hooves removing dirt or foreign matter from sole and frog 2. Rubber curry - only on flèche parts of body, in circular motion, to remove heavy dirt and loose hair 3. Dandy brush - remove sweat marks, caked dirt and dust from coat. Brisk flicking motion 4. Soft body brush - to remove any remaining dust on body, legs and head + rubber curry or metal curry. Rhythmic motion with one stoke on the horse in the direction of hair growth and next stroke on the rubber curry removing dust from brush 5. Dry rag/ towel - smooth the hair make coat shine 6. Damp sponge - first to clean eyes and nostrils, another to clean under the tail, Amis, sheath or teats 7. Body brush - on mane and tail because less likely to break hair. Comb used only after all tangles have been removed
