Hormones of the Neurohypophysis Flashcards
0
Q
Neuroendocrine reflex
A
input is neural
output is hormonal
1
Q
- Oxytocin
“great facilitator of life”
A
2 target tissues:
- uterus- enhances contraction of smooth muscle cells in uterine wall
- breasts- milk ejection (let-down), in response to mechanical stimulation of sucking by infant
2
Q
- Antidiuretic hormone
A
decreases urine production
increases retention of water by the body
3 target tissues
- kidney- retain more water
- sudoriferous glands- decrease output
- smooth muscle in walls of arteriolar- they contract & constrict the arteriolar, raising BP (vasopressin)
3
Q
Diabetes insipidus
A
caused by low levels of ADH
large urine output=dehydration
caused by:
-undersecretion of ADH due to head trauma or a tumor
-loss of blood flow to posterior pituitary
4
Q
Diabetes insipidus symptoms
A
excessive thirst
craving ice
excessive urine volume (due to lack of ADH)
5
Q
diabetes insipidus treatment
A
removal or tumor
anti-inflammatories to remove pressure
controlled with ADH (Vasopressin- nasal spray, tablets)
