What is adrenaline?
A hormone secreted in ‘fight or flight’ situations
- When you are frightened or need to run away from danger.
- you need this hormone when the body expects imminent action and takes measures to act quickly.
- —–> when body feels like survival may be at stake
Give examples of situations in which adrenaline secretion increases.
1) extreme sport
2) roller coasters
3) scary movies
Role of hormone adrenaline
1) makes HEART beat faster so more blood can be pumped to muscles and more oxygen + glucose can be delivered to them.
2) makes LIVER convert
glycogen stores –> soluble glucose
for transport to muscles
3) BREATHING RATE increases so airways dilate to allow more oxygen to enter blood
4) BRAIN & MUSCLES are supplied with more blood as the arterioles supplying them dilate
5)OTHER ORGANS have less blood flow e.g. Intestin to allow more of resources to go to organs that are needed in response
Function of insulin
- controls blood lucus levels
- turns Glucose ———> fat + glycogen (for storage)
in liver
Function of testosterone
- sperm production
