Hormones Flashcards
1
Q
Adrenaline
A
- released by adrenal glands
- increases delivery of oxygen and glucose to the brain
- increases heart rate and breathing rate
- initiates conversion of glycogen to glucose in the liver for respiration
2
Q
Insulin
A
- secreted from a gland in the Islets of Langerham
- decreases blood glucose levels
- lowers blood pressure and prevents vessel damage
- stores glucose in cells to provide energy
- begins conversion of glucose to glycogen
3
Q
Progesterone
A
- source is ovaries
- produced in the ovaries after ovulation
- maintains the lining of the uterus
- when progesterone levels fall, the lining breaks
- inhibits release of FSH and LH
4
Q
Oestrogen
A
- source is ovaries
- FSH stimulates production of oestrogen
- produced in the ovaries
- stimulates production of LH
- causes the lining of the uterus to thicken and grow
5
Q
Testosterone
A
- source is testes
- main sex hormone in males
- it is the development of secondary sexual characteristics in males
6
Q
ADH
A
- anti-diuretic hormone
- produced in the pituitary glands
- acts on the collecting duct
- released when body is dehydrated
- causes water to be reabsorbed into blood
- urine becomes more concentrated
7
Q
FSH
A
- produced in the pituitary gland
- follicle stimulating hormone
- released in the pituitary glands
- stimulates the production of oestrogen
- causes an egg to develop
8
Q
LH
A
- produced in the pituitary gland
- luteinizing hormone
- stimulates the release of an an egg at day 14 (ovulation)
- stimulates the production of progesterone
- inhibits the production of oestrogen
