What happens when there is a surge of the growth hormone? When does this surge occur?
A
- a large growth spurt
- towards the end of childhood and early into adolescence

From where is the growth hormone released?
A
The pituitary gland (found in the brain)

What does the growth hormone do?
A
- causes bones to enlarge
- cause protein to build up in cells
- increases size of muscles
- increases size of various organs in the body

What are gonadotrophic hormones?
A
- hormones that cause gonads (sex organs - ovaries and testes) to grow and produce hormones of their own
- follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
- luteinizing hormone (LH)

From where are gonadotrophic released?
A
The pituitary gland releases them into the blood and they travel to the gonads

What does FSH do?
A
In girls
- stimulates growth of follicles (cells containing ova in the ovaries)
- causes immature ova to ripen and mature
- important function in controlling menstruation
In boys
- stimulates the testes to produce sperm

What does LH do?
A
Females:
- causes ovulation
- stimulates testes to secrete testosterone

Oestrogen
A
- primarily the female sex hormone
- produced and secreted by ovaries
- has an important role in controlling menstruation
- mainly concerned in building up the uterus lining
- effects on sexual development:
- growth of breasts
- fat deposits on hips, thighs and breasts
- growth of reproductive and associated organs

A
- has an important function in controlling menstruation
- mainly involved in maintaining uterus lining

Testosterone
A
- primarily male sex hormone
- deepens voice
- stimulates growth of facial hair
- stimulates development of a muscular body
- stimulates growth of pubic hair
- is carried by blood to brain which causes increase in sexual arousal
