Hormones Flashcards
Human Growth hormone (hGH)
Made/Secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: many body cells
Action: Causes cells to grow, divide, & create new cells
Hypothalamus
Located in the brain below the thalamus.”Master” if Pituitary Gland.
Has a role in: water balance, metabolism, body temp, appetite, emotions. [Link between the nervous and endocrine systems.]
Pineal Gland
Produces/Secretes Melatonin. Controls sleep patterns
Pituitary Gland
Pea-size gland located deep within the crainum at base of brain. “Master gland”- regulates activities of entire endocrine system.
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
Made/Secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: Adrenal Gland
Action: Stimulate adrenal gland to produce its own set of hormones (glucocoritcoids & adrenocorticol)
Follicle Stimulating hormone (FSH)
Made/Secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: Ovaries/Testes
Action: produce gametes (sperm/eggs)
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
Made/secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: Ovaries/Testes
Action: influence development of gametes (sperm/eggs).
Promotes progesterone/testosterone production
Prolactin (PRL)
Made/Secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: cells of mammary glands
Action: stimulate cells of mammary glands to produce own hormones. Milk production
Thyroid Stimulating hormone (TSH)
Made/Secreted: Anterior Pituitary
Target: Thyroid
Action: stimulates thyroid to produce Thyroid hormone
Antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
Made/Secreted: Posterior Pituitary
Target: cells of kidney
Action: Stimulates kidney cells to reabsorb more water back into blood stream
Oxytocin (OT)
Made/Secreted: Posterior Pituitary
Target: muscles in wall of uterus & mammary glands
Action: stimulate uterine contraction and milk production
Triiodothronine (T3) & Thyroxine (T4)
Made: Thyroid Gland
Target: all body cells
Action: causes cells to increase their metabolism
Calcitonin (CT)
Made: Thyroid Gland
Target: Bone cells (osteoclasts)
Action: stimulates osteoblasts to lay down more bone (produce more matrix which stores calcium). Causes you to store more Calcium (decrease calcium level in blood)
Parathyroid hormone (PTH)
Made: Parathyroid
Target: Bone cells
Action: increase blood calcium levels & decrease blood phosphate levels. Increase # and activity of osteoclasts
2nd Target: Kidney cells
Action: regulate calcium and phosphate re-absorption from urine
Thymosin hormone
Made: Thymus
Target: T Cells
Action: promote maturation of T-cells
