Drug Classifications Flashcards
Analgesics
create a state in which the pain from a painful medical condition is reduced or not felt
3 types of Analgesics
Salicylates: mild to moderate pain, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic
Ex- Bayer
NSAIDS: more potent than salicylates, mild to moderate pain, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic
Ex-Advil
Opiate-type: severe pain, addicting
Ex- Morphine
Anesthetics
cause an absence of sensation or pain
Types of Anesthetics
Local: block pain conduction from local sites, no loss of consciousness
dental work, birth pain, sunburn, etc.
Ex- Novacaine
General: depress the CNS to the level of unconsciousness
surgical. Route: Inhalation or IV
Ex- Valium, Forane, Ultane, etc.
Anti-Infectives
treat disease produced by microorganisms such as baceria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and parasitic worms
Types of Anti-Infectives
Antibiotics (Antimicrobials) - attack bacteria
Antivirals - inhibit replicaton of viruses
Antifungals - fungal cell is destroyed as drug prevents cell permeability and nutrition.
Antineoplastics
inhibit new growth of cancer cells or neoplasms (new and abnormal tissue growth, often referring to cancer cells)
Types of Antineoplastics
Antimetabolites Alkylating Agents Plant Alkaloids Hormones Anti-tumor Antibiotics Radioactive Isotopes
Beta Blocker
Cardio Agent
“-olol” drugs
reduce the oxygen demands of the heart. treat high blood pressure or arrythmias
Calcium Channel Blockers
Cardio Agent
relax the heart by reducing heart conduction. Treat high blood pressure or arrythmias
Diuretics
Cardio Agent
Decrease blood pressure by decreasing blood volume by increasing urination
ACE inhibitors
Cardio Agent
“-pril” drugs
relax the blood vessels. Treat high blood pressure
Vasodilators
Cardio Agent
relax and expand the blood vessels
Antianginals
Cardio Agent
treat cardiac related chest pain (angina).
Beta-Blockers, Calcium Channel Blockers, & Nitrates
Antiarrhythmics
Cardio Agent
treat irregular heart rhythms
Beta blockers & drugs that block sodium, potassium ion, and calcium channels
