hormones Flashcards
A01
Hormones are chemical messengers of the body. They differ from neurotransmitters as they travel In the bloodstream at a much slower rate and can affect things such as metabolism and mood, but also have a role in reproduction and sexual function.
Aggression could be a result of hormones and hormonal mechanisms: much of the basic knowledge for this has been gained from non-human animal studies.
cortisol
cortisol is a hormone produced in the adrenal glands, while its responsible for waking us up in the morning, its main job is managing stress levels.
testosterone
generally accepted that men are more aggressive than women; it could be that aggression is at least in part the result of the hormone testosterone.
Dual hormone hypothesis
one theory highlights the role of a second hormone, cortisol, secreted by adrenal glands to protect the body against the effect of stress. This suggests that there is an interaction between the systems responsible for regulating aggression and the stress response.
