evolution Flashcards
fitness
measure of an animals ability to pass on its genes, in terms of the number of viable offspring that arise.
adaptation
A physical feature or behaviour is said to be adapted to an environment in that is has been tested for its suitability to that environment. Those individuals that provide the best fit survive and pass on genes
mutation
a change in genetic structure of an animal or plant that makes it different from others of the same kind
sexual selection
a form of natural selection; individuals that are successful in attracting a mate out-reproduce others in that population.
genes
a unit of heredity that contains DNA carrying information from one generation to the next.
genotype and phenotype
genotype- the genetic constitution
phenotype- what the individual becomes when the genes interact with each other and the environment.
environmental triggers
genes do not control all human characteristics because environment also has a part to play.
Evolution A01 (intro.)
evolution is how inherited characteristics in organisms, including humans, change from generation to generation. Evolutionary psychologists ague that the mind evolved much like the body and that some aspects of human behaviour result from evolutionary adaptations.
