- little chemical molecules that primarily travels through the bloodstream
- would bind to matching receptor and turn the gene on or off (would not bind to receptor that does not match)

estrogen : maintain and regulate female reproductive system
testosterone : maintain and regulate male reproductive system and secondary sex characteristic
