Hormones Flashcards
Endocrine Gland
: A ductless gland which secretes hormones directly into the blood
Exocrine Gland
Gland which secretes chemicals into a duct which carries them to where they are required
Hormone
Small molecules made by endocrine glands that are transported in the blood and bind to specific complementary receptors on target cells and act as chemical messengers
Target Tissue
Tissues that are affected by hormones and have specific complementary receptors for particular hormones
First Messenger
A hormone that transmits a signal round then body
Second Messenger
A chemical produced inside a cell in response to a hormone binding to the cells receptor. An example is cAMP.
Islets if Langerhans
Patches of endocrine tissue in the pancreas which contain alpha and beta cells
Alpha Cells
Cells found in the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas that secrete glucagon
