Communication Flashcards
Stimulus
Any change in the environment that causes a response
Response
A change in behaviour or physiology as a result of a change in the environment
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment within normal set limits despite changes in the environment
Negative feedback
A process that responds to changes in the environment by returning the internal environment back to its steady state. Leads to homeostasis
Positive feedback
A process that responds to changes in the environment by increasing the change in conditions. It is usually harmful and does not have a role to play in homeostasis.
Endotherm
Organisms that maintain a constant core body temperature within set limits, independently of external temperature
Ectotherm
Organism whose body temperature changes in response to the environmental temperature. They rely on external sources of heat to maintain their body temperature.
