Hormones Flashcards
What are hormones secreted in response to? (With examples)
In response to a stimulus:
- neuronal stimulus
- change in ion or nutrient level
- change in the level of another hormone
What are hormones transported throughout the body by?
Blood (or lymph)
What do hormones bind to?
Specific receptors
Negative feedback loop in control of hormones
Common. Further secretion of a hormone is stopped in response to adequate levels of that hormone
Positive feedback loop in control of hormones
Rare. Release of additional hormone occurs in response to the original hormone release
What are the two major groups of hormone classes? (based on chemical structure)
Aminos acid derivatives are water soluble: amines, peptides and proteins.
Lipid derivatives are lipid-soluble: steroid hormones
Responses induced by hormones
- Opening or closing ion channels
- Activating or inactivating enzymes
- Promoting or inhibiting secretion of intracellular products
- Increasing or decreasing gene expression (i.e. altering transcription)
- Stimulating or inhibiting cell division
