Hormones Flashcards
What is the difference between the nervous system and the endocrine system?
The nervous system uses neurons to send and deliver messages that are fast acting localised and short lived. The Endo crying system sends slower moving hormones through our blood that target broad areas and have more lingering effects.

What is a gland?
A gland is any structure that makes and secretes hormones. They are messengers circulating around the body telling them what to do.
What is the master gland in the body?
Pituitary which produces many hormones that signal other glands like thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and penal glands to make their own hormones.
What organs are a part of the Endo crime system?
Gonads, pancreas and the placenta (in pregnant women)
What part of the brain as a part of the endocrine system?
Hypothalamus. As it does produce and release hormones
Explain target cells
Hormones can only trigger a reaction in specific cells. so-called target cells that have the right receptors for it. When a target cell is activated, the hormone alters its activity by either increasing or decreasing some of its functions usually with the goal of maintaining your bodies homeostasis
What is the gonads?
Primary reproductive organs
Testicles = male
Ovaries = female
