Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
A systems ability to maintain a stable state when its surroundings change
What levels does the body need to keep within narrow limits?
Temperature, sugar, salt and water
If the body doesn’t keep its levels within our limits what will happen?
It will grow sick and die
Explain negative feedback.
It is when a variable in your body triggers a counteracting response in order to come back to a set point.
What is glucose?
A type of blood sugar that most of your body cells rely on for fuel
Give an example of negative feedback
Glucose Blood Sugar.
Hot environment and cold environment
What is insulin?
A hormone that makes cells take in glucose
What is Glucagon?
Glucagon causes liver to release glucose into blood.
Explain Positive Feedback
Intensify the variable that is causing the body to be unstable so that it will become stable once again
Example of Positive feedback
Baby ready to be born, pressure on cervix»_space; that pressure plus adding hormones will cause contractions on uterus»_space; contractions will help baby be pushed out
