Hormones Flashcards
Hormones are
Chemical messengers
That regulate the activity of certain cells/organs
Produced in endocrine glands
Are all parts of the body affected by a particular hormone? Why?
No,
Hormones are specific to target cells/organs
Gland: hypothalamus
- Produces many hormones which target the pituitary gland
- Control release of hormones from pituitary gland
Gland: pituitary gland
- Produces Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) which target ovary and testes
- F = stimulates ovum production
- M = stimulates production and maturation of sperm
Gland: pituitary gland
-Produces growth hormone which targets
all cells
-stimulates growth and
increases cell metabolism
Gland: Pituitary gland
- Produces antidiuretic hormone (ADH) which targets kidneys
- removes water from urine to be absorbed into the blood stream
Gland: Pineal gland
- Produces melatonin which targets mainly the brain
- Regulates sleep patterns
Gland: Adrenal gland
-Produces adrenaline which targets heart
muscles and other tissues
-Increases breathing and heart rate and metabolism
Gland: Adrenal gland
- Produces cortisol which targets most tissues
- Promotes breakdown of stored nutrients into energy
Gland: Pancreas
- Produces insulin and targets most cells
- Causes glucose in blood to be converted into glycogen to reduce blood glucose levels
Gland: pancreas
- Produces Glucagon and targets liver and fat storage of tissues -Causes stored glycogen and proteins to be converted into glucose to increase blood glucose levels.
Gland: thyroid
- Produces thyroxine and targets most cells
- increases metabolism and body temperature
Gland: parathyroid
- produces parathyroid hormone and targets bones, small intestine and kidneys
- Increases blood calcium levels
